Vignon Pere & Fils 2017 Grand Cru Reserve Des Marquises

Last year, Vignon Pere & Fils was our best new discovery (and most popular) in the grower Champagne category.  That said, it was before we started exploring the region for ourselves.  Wow, have we got surprises with our CRAZY good discoveries!  Vignon does NOT suffer in comparison, but the artisanal quality of Champagne coming out of no-name, small-time micro-growers is rather mind blowing.

If you missed yesterday’s email about our new Grower Champagne Club, feel free to circle back because today we’re offering 15% discounts on Vignon Pere & Fils when you join.

During this introductory period, joining the club gets you 10% off of ANY Champagne we sell, not just Vignon Pere & Fils.  So think about it, seriously.

Let’s refocus on Vignon Pere & Fils….

It was wonderful to hear your glowing feedback on this Champagne and for many of you looking for reloads, we were just as disappointed as you that we’d sold out with no opportunity to obtain more until the following vintage.  There is some good news though!

While in Champagne, I met with the colleague who facilitated my relationship as an importer of Vignon wines.  Obviously, the new vintage was not yet available but I whined a bit about demand already exceeding supply and it’s marvelous what a squeaky wheel can achieve.  He nearly whispered, “there are 120 bottles of the 2017 Reserve des Marquieses already on their way to California.”   I have no idea how he was able to divert those to me, but I calmly put my coffee down and told him “I’ll take it…. ALL!”

Let’s just say, I’m gonna put a ring on this!

It’s a good one! You may have noticed that we’re getting our email archives online, which we’re calling the “The Wine Buzz.” You’re welcome to read the history of this colorful young gentleman Stephane Vignon who farms 6 hectares of Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in his home village of Verzenay and Verzy. For years he has sold his grapes to the big houses and has been making some small lots of his own wines. Then Covid hit.

His operation reminds one of visiting Fred Savart some 15 years ago and I laughed tripping over his hiking shoes.  This guy is making world class wine in his garage!

You will immediately notice the small elegant bubbles percolate up through the beautiful light golden color.  The pinot noir shows through on the nose with richness and hints of red fruit.  The chardonnay gives the wine its backbone on a crisp, fresh persistent finish.  This is the kind of Champagne I never get tired of drinking.
