2022 Domaine Paul Pernot
Today, I bring you a cherry-picked list of the 2022 Domaine Paul Pernot. The list of wines below is the best of the lineup in my opinion! And while I chose wines that didn’t require a second mortgage, for those of you who would like to indulge in the Grand Cru’s, please inquire with me!
I’d describe the style of the wines here as giving, but with that underlying Puligny tension. Puligny Montrachet is marked first and foremost by minerality; the chiseled wet stone character that is an underlying flavor in any Puligny you taste - at least the good ones.
As warmer temperatures and greater ripeness have become the norm, it has pushed winemakers to adapt to what mother nature gives them but at the same time preserve that Puligny expression and transparency. Domaine Paul Pernot has done just that - there is no doubt when you taste any of the wines that Puligny Montrachet is in the DNA.
These wines, including the Bourgogne, are worth your attention!
The Pernot family has been involved in winemaking for several generations, and their domaine has been passed down from father to son for over a century. Paul Pernot, the namesake of the winery, inherited the estate from his father and dedicated himself to continuing the family's winemaking legacy.
Paul, now in his 90’s has handed the day to day stuff to his two sons Philippe and Michel and together, they continue to elevate the domaine’s reputation, earning accolades from critics and enthusiasts alike, while sticking to their classic winemaking techniques. The wines are barrel fermented, aged around 11 months, and then bottled before the next vintage.
This is an important Domaine in Pulginy with 20 hectares of vines in a number of the Grand Crus, as well as very important holdings in the 1er crus Pucelles, Folatieres, Clos de la Garanne (starred in red in the above map). One of the reasons you don’t see much of the wine for sale in the market is that 80% of the fruit goes to Drouhin in an agreement entered into years ago. The small percentage of wine they do bottle, as I said earlier, is worth your attention - especially in a vintage like 2022!
