Domaine Ravaut Ladoix “les Carrieres”

The entire wine industry is changing in many ways, but perhaps most notably for producers.  Viticulture was never easy, but with climate change there are winners and losers you could never have imagined a decade or two ago. Today, we bring you a major winner, and an eye-opening revelation

Fifteen years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it if you said I’d be whole-heartedly recommending a wine from Ladoix. Today I present you an amazing new discovery - Domaine Ravaut Ladoix “les Carrieres.” Climate change has really been beneficial for Ladoix, as it has allowed what was typically an appellation that struggled for ripeness, and as anyone that can remember back in the day, the wines were rustic and quite frankly not interesting. Back in 2010, I remember driving out of Beaune with one of my suppliers and asking if there was anything worthwhile in Ladoix? He had lived his entire life in Burgundy and replied, “I wouldn’t know, I’ve never stopped.

Just this last Monday, one of the most reliable importers based in LA asked if he could visit. He’d just been here a week ago, “You sure you want to drive the 1.5 hours up here again?” His new container had just arrived and he couldn’t wait to share a couple new producers he had discovered from his last trip to France. He rolled up with a lineup of 14 bottles but the real standout in the lineup was the Domaine Ravaut Ladoix “les Carrieres.” I had to congratulate him! It’s really a great new find and a standout in the lineup.

This is the type of wine I’m always searching for – it’s not overly expensive but delivers that Burgundy experience you get from the sexy appellations, that sell typically in the $80-100 price range. Red and black fruits are easy to identify from the very giving nose. In the mouth the wine offers medium weight density that expands on the mid palate and coats your entire mouth with a seamless texture. It’s so easy to drink and hard to put down - quite impressive for a wine at this price point.  It delivers a pop and pour, crowd-pleasing quality.

You’ll want to grab some of these if you enjoy drinking Burgundy but want to hang on to your wallet. You will love it!
