2022 Domaine Bzikot Bourgogne Blanc & Rouge
With the 2011 vintage, I introduced my customers to Domaine Bzikot (zee-coat); hard to believe it was that long ago and how things have changed and improved for this region and domaine. Last week, I emailed a story about Jean Marc Pillot and the dramatic upward arc in quality of Chassange’s rouge. This story is similar.
Well over a decade ago, I’d met Moussieur Bizkot, almost by chance, when I was visiting a supplier right off the main square in Puligny Montrachet. This supplier had an office right next door to Bzikot’s domain and she asked if I wanted to meet some friends… and I said sure!
Domaine Bzikot is a Polish husband and wife team, Sylvain & Béatrice. Sylvain’s grandfather arrived in Burgundy in 1940 - not exactly at a very prosperous time for the vigneron. With some hard work, eventually he purchased some vineyards and today the domaine holds roughly 13 ha located in both Puligny and Meursault.
While they do produce some premier cru and grand cru wines it's always their wines at the bourgogne level that I’ve found of exceptional quality. There is a blanc and a rogue is made from domaine vineyards, the blanc comes from purchased fruit.
The obvious choice for a domaine located in Puligny Montrachet would be the white wine, which has of course always been fantastic. It is made from purchased fruit in the flatter vineyards of Puligny (i.e. closer to the main road) and delivers a wet stone, citrus leaning nose with freshness and minerality on the palate. Like so many 2022 Bourgogne Blanc - it's just terrific!
As good as the blanc is, it's the bourgogne rouge that is the real sleeper. This is from domaine fruit located on the north side of the Meursault appellation - you might as well call it Volnay! It’s a beautiful nose of red cherry and plum, intermixed with some spice notes in the background and made in a supremely elegant style. I wouldn’t say it’s austere, but will say that riper vintages bring a suppleness, striking an even more perfect balance.
Already a few of you picked some off when I posted this to the website. I couldn’t buy as much as I liked, so don’t think too long or hard. It’ll be gone.
