Two 2022 Burgundy Wines

Today, I present not one wine but two 2022 Burgundys from different producers. I have visited the domaines on many occasions and I have a very long history with both. Why am I presenting these together? Well, with a little time and experience, Burgundy buyers know that most producers have a handful of wines in their lineup that stand out. Both wines today fall into that category.

First up is a wine I have been buying for my own cellar for years: Pousse d’Or Volnay 1er Clos 60 Ouvrees. This is a 2.5 hectare monopole vineyard that sits in the northwest portion of Caillerets. Always deep fruited, with excellent spice and concentration. I never find it to be overly giving in its youth as it is a powerful wine, displaying good tannin and crunch.  Rather, at the 12 year mark I really find this one starting to hit its stride, at least with warmer vintages. It's a fabulous terroir and always one of the best wines coming from the Cote de Beaune. For the moment, I don’t see any reviews for 2022 Pousse d’Or. Rest assured, with its track record, it is always a strong buy.

The second wine is one I was introduced to on one of my very first trips to burgundy and have been buying it ever since, at every opportunity: JJ Confuron Nuits St Georges 1er Aux Boudots. For those unfamiliar with Boudots, this is the most northerly vineyard in the Nuits St Georges appellation. It is the vineyard that sits just to the south of Vosne Romanee’s 1er Malconsorts. When people talk about the Nuits on this side of the Commune they refer to the wines having more in common with Vosne than they do Nuits. The wine offers the power you come to expect from Nuits, but with an elegance and texture that is oh-so-Vosne. Always an impressive wine and one that comes highly recommended.
