Domaine Leflaive

Today, I’m delighted to offer a small parcel of some of 2021 Maconnais from Domaine Leflaive and at the best prices you will find.

Domaine Leflaive is one of the great domaines of Burgundy.  Twenty years ago, their vision for making wine from vineyards they purchased in the Macon forged a new path and shone a light on the potential of this area, a potential this region is now realizing.  

Its location, 100 kilometers south of Burgundy, offers a slightly warmer climate, which obviously helps with maturity.  However what makes these wines so interesting is their ability to retain freshness and cut from the limestone soils in which they are grown because Leflaive has applied the same meticulous attention to detail to their farming as they have to their winemaking. Not surprisingly, the Macon is producing its most profound wines, as is Domaine Leflaive.

The Macon is relatively close to Puligny Montrachet (approximately 80 kilometers to the south) and the two locals have quite a bit in common.

Macon is at a slightly higher elevation and therefore a cooler climate, so freshness and acidity are always at the forefront of the wines. Leflaive has applied the same precision winemaking coupled with the biodynamic approach to farming that has made them one of the leading producers in Puligny Montrachet. To make sure nothing of the vineyard’s character is lost, Leflaive ferments these wines in stainless-steel tanks using indigenous yeast. This is followed by 15 months of aging in a combination of stainless-steel tanks, concrete vats, and mature oak barrels, adding to this wine’s astonishingly layered palate. Great wines start in the vineyard and as a result the hard work and commitment to quality allows them to produce Chardonnays that are envied by anyone lucky enough to taste them.
