Jean Charles Chassagne Montrachet Vieille Vigne Rouge 2021
“Is there any more Jean Charles Chassagne Montrachet Rouge available?” Crazy to think, I must get this question every week. Apparently, I moved the needle a bit because that was NEVER a question before. This wine has been a huge success the last several vintages, and THANK YOU to those who trusted my opinion and tried it (which, at the time, was contrary to conventional wisdom). Clearly you agree this wine is worth your attention! BIG quality - SMALL price point.
The other day, the importer sent a bottle of Jean Charles 2021 vintage to sample. I let it sit for a couple of days and then got around to opening it. As I’ve written numerous times before, I absolutely love the 2021 vintage! With climate change, it’s rare to get a cooler growing season and its style brings me back to a time somewhat forgotten, when Burgundy wines struggled for ripeness, and the resulting wines were more sleek, understated and elegant vs ripe, loud and in your face.
The 2021 Jean Charles is what “classic” burgundy is supposed to taste like. Its medium-bodied, red fruited profile enters the mouth in a linear way and then fans out on the back of the palate when you swallow. It's a wine that provokes thought. The flavors are not as obvious as both the 2019 or 2020 versions, but it’s the style of wine I prefer.
I don’t feel there is any rush to get after this one. My plan is to cellar 6 or so for 2-3 years and let them flourish!
This is the type of wine I never get tired of drinking and think anyone in search of refinement and elegance is very much going to appreciate it. When you consider its $39 price tag, it’s a no brainer!
